Sweet Smell of Sexcess

I thought I have found the perfect perfume for the new rebranding of myself a couple of months ago.  It turns out that it goes beyond that. In fact, when I finally owned the Gucci Guilty fragrance on my hand, and spritz it onto my body... nothing is more magical than having a new scent to solidify the rebranding effort that I'm talking about. Prominent, seductive, sexy, and boy... do I love what does the ad campaign says about it after all. [click]

But, stop! Suddenly I was thrown out of proportion when I found out that the Gucci Guilty has a new sibling which has just being released right after. When I looked at the bottle - the pitch black throughout - I know straightaway that it will lure me to it like a magnet to the iron. (I love black, enough said). Immediately I became infatuated to it, so enchanted by the look of the fragrance. It exudes mystery, mystique, dark, edgy, allure and seduction more than the previous Guilty. I said to myself, I have to get it no matter what. I wanna be engorged into its scent like no other. I wanna feel this new intensity.

And then I went for a quest to search for one. I went to Sasa, nope they don't stock it. To Sephora, none in my sight. Then to Jusco, they don't have it either. In fact they doesn't know this one ever existed and insisted that Gucci Guilty is the latest. And then to Debenhams - not in the shelf, yet later the salesguy informed me it might be released into Malaysian market next year. Nice try, but I'm not convinced by the answer. This is me we're talking about. I can't wait for next year. I want it NOW!

So, October arrives when suddenly I planted a big hope that I could get it as a present for my birthday. Is that a prayer again? Absolutely... as alas, a parcel arrived right from London and contain a seductively black box among the green polystyrene box filler with the familiar golden letters on it. It is so fantastic!

What is more fantastic, the scent is much sexier than the previous Gucci Guilty. Still freshly fantabulous, yet more citrusy, which is a signature smell for the Scorpio. It's a pure magnetism, very alluring and yes, INTENSE. Gucci Guilty Intense.

And by having this on the right moment for my b'day, nothing more I can say other than: what a sweet smell of sexcess!

*oh, why do I say sexcess? read the article in Men's Health UK October issue down there. Then you'll know why...

doesn't it feel like a Batman calling...?

Guilty Intense has all pitch black, compared to previous Guilty i.e. a juxtapose of clear and dark.

Ombre Glitter Nails

312

I hardly ever paint my nails as I'm constantly using my hands (thus my nails are always short) but while I was in New York at Duane Reade looking for junk food on my first night, I couldn't resist all the pretty nail polishes. I remember seeing Alexa Chung at the CFDA/Sunglass Hut event the other time I was in New York, and her nails were painted in a glittery green polish. Although not ombre, I thought it'd be cool to try the ombre effect in glitter. It's a lot sparkly and glittery in person than in pictures.

I'm in Shock!

When I told my mates that I'm gonna have a bigfat birthday celebration again this year, I summoned them not to send me any present. Why? Coz it'll end up being a white elephant since most of the present that people gave I never used 'em. Or in other words, they're not my taste.. erkkss! So, what I did this year is asking them to send me money instead... or at least shopping vouchers (that include the one I asked Angie!), coz I definitely can buy things that I like. It's much more worth it. Or better yet, I told them to pay the thing that I bought - provided that it's within their budget limitation. Am I cruel or what, ahaks!

So, last week a parcel arrived. I'm in total shock. Shock #1 - it's from London. Shock #2 - there's a box within a box, and that second box is a golden present box tied nicely and came with a birthday card. Shock #3 - it IS a Shock. The ck One Shock! What better way to start the fleet of my presents with this one, huh?

One word, absolutely liking it! (oh, it's three words..ngg). The all-black bottle scribbled with the trailing neon green 'SHOCK' word is a true attention-grabber. Very masculine, very dark chic and very edgy packaging. I've been eyeing this ck One Shock for quite some time ever since its released recently but haven't found it anywhere here in Malaysia. Probably it hasn't been released yet in this country, or I haven't search hard enough. But when I got the chance to get it online, I didn't wait long - especially when someone's willing to pay for it (ehem...).

So, what's my verdict on the smell? As it says on the bottle : shock! This is unlike the typical unisex scent of the famous ck One. It's more like a cross between the original ck One and Calvin Klein Man; hence giving its special appeal as it is made just for men (there's another One Shock  for the ladies, btw). The first spritz gives off that citrusy smell which is a typical Scorpion much-loved scent, yet quite energetic and pungent. Then it finishes off with a trail of sweet smell of tobacco, which is quirkily alluring in a way. No, not the tobacco as in tobacco that your dad put in his cigar - but a subtle aromatic and deep oriental mix, since there's a hint of spices and woody appeal in its formula (black pepper, black basil, musk, patchoulli and ambrene wood). Very nice smell, yet I won't wear it during the daytime coz perspiration during the hot day would kill the scent-sation. It's much better during the evening, just the right mood to bring out its sexy spiceness!

Love this gift, definitely. Shocking... but a good, nice shock. :)

there's a hair & body wash too. awesome!

I even love the packaging box. black, white and neon green. what more shocking could I ask for?!

after three Man, plenty of Free spirits.... now I'm ready to move on for Shock!

Mentioning the present box, who can say no to this pretty neat golden box? So chic and cool
... especially there's a cute b'day card came with it! :)

Bang Bang!

When Marc Jacobs came up with his signature perfume for men last year, Bang!, it's been a massive hooplas surrounding the release of the fragrance. Not just about the newly designed bottle that looks like a silver box being knocked by a hammer to its center, but also the ad campaign that features the designer himself in a very provocative shot of him posing naked, only to be covered by the massive perfume bottle in front of his manhood. So provocative that during the Fashion's Night Out last year, lots of people queue at his Marc by Marc Jacobs store in Mayfair, London just to get the free t-shirt bearing that image. I dunno what's so special about it reallly; it's not even flattering to be honest. Yikes! And when it comes to the smell of the scent, again, IMO it's not even flattering at all either. With spicy base notes of pepper and peppercorns, it smells like you've just came out from your mum's spice cabinet... eeek!

Jump into Autumn 2011, the latest fragrance is something absolutely different from its predecessor. When I was sent the sample of the perfume last week, I can automatically stamped ooh, I just love this new perfume! Named Bang Bangthis new fragrance by Marc Jacobs is less oriental spice but more to sexy sporty spice due to its fresher and much energetic appeal. I can automatically detect the citrusy smell just by the first spritz, which is confirmed by the presence of the lemon essence in its top notes, It is then wrap up afterwards with a pleasing woody aura of the sandalwood (and cashmere musk) that is quite sexy. And looking at the image of the original bottle, I can say it's quite an attention grabber due to its royal blue color.

Could this Marc Jacobs Bang Bang be a new list to be considered by my fellow Scorpions? With the citrus lemon scent in its formula - that's deff a deal-breaker to me! Oh, btw... do you know that according to the Journal of Chemical Senses, the enduring aroma of a lemon is actually a powerful secret weapon that you could wear on a date? Yeah, now you know. Just to be safe, don't go to the pantry and squeeze lemon to your body just to get that effect - wear this Bang Bang, instead, okay!

Just Feel the Intensity!

The perfect autumn setting : just picture this. The leaves turn golden brown trickling down from the trees. The sky metamorphose into a dimmer grey facade that making your sight goes dewy. The cool weather with a seductive autumnal breeze whispering your earlobes, trying to romance your attention. And you cuddling up in your best ultra luscious cashmere sweater, with your arms wrapped around your body trying to keep your body warm. Can't you just feel it - the sexy mood of autumn?

I think that's the reason my ultra favorite brands have gone a bit lusty when it comes to the latest version of their perfumes. To suit the sexy mood of autumn. Very dark and mysterious, edgy and sexy ... as if it could unleashed your inner sexual energy with a spritz of the scent. Feel the power. Feel the heat. Unleashed the inner raw prowess in you.

Gucci Guilty, Dior Homme and Prada Amber: they're all agree to one. Being Intense

Sephora Has Landed at Bukit Bintang!

Mention the name Sephora, I think all New Yorkers would definitely know what it's all about. The beauty retailer where you can get almost anything from fragrance, skincare, haircare...name it. Actually it's no difference than Boots in the UK, apart from the name Sephora is much more upmarket and so 'coveted' than a type of footwear! (Sorry Boots!)

Now for the KLites, you too can have a taste of the Big Apple as the store has just landed on the Golden Triangle at Bukit Bintang, KL. Located exactly just beside Starhill Gallery and Louis Vuitton store, as well as opposite Fahrenheit 88 and Pavillion KL, it's not just the brandname that you should be celebrating to; but the building itself.

Looking like an alien spaceship that had just found land on Earth, its architecture is so futuristic - like an origami ball with all the angular sides randomly folded and shaped. Combining glass and concrete structure, which is supported by the steel frame underneath; Sephora Bukit Bintang is one destination you would never forget when you get your Gucci Guilty perfume or that Clinique shaving creme in your next visit. Just by looking at it you'll be gasping in awe...

Have a look at my snaps, and the pix in the previous issue of Space magazine. Awesome!

snap!

...and snap, snap, snap! Boy, do that car looks so awesome!

Sephora @ the Golden Triangle, as being featured in the Space magazine. Hmmm... reminds me to sing that song. "You're an alien, your touch so foreign... it's supernatural, extra-terrestrial!"...

Btw, Sephora has an iPad and iPhone apps. So, check 'em out.

Finally, I'm Guilty!

To search for a new perfume to stamp on the effort for rebranding is not easy. Last time, when I switched my Polo Sport Ralph Laurent that I've been wearing for more than five years since the year 2000 for Carolina Herrera Chic, I felt a sense of a new rebirth when the scent fell onto my body. Just a whole new world started to emerge and made me feel like a new person again. A new person who'd like to change for a better. A new person who wanna do my thing my own way. A new person who really wanna embrace the new style that has been dragging me into the style blackhole, and out into a new chicness. It's magical that, how a fragrance can really change the way you feel.

And now, I've been talking about rebranding of me for quite some time now. To seal the deal, I'm on the quest of searching for a perfect perfume to reflect the sense of newness in me. I've searched high and low, in and out of some perfume counters, trying out some testers in hoping to find the one. What I wanted is simple: the brand must be iconic and reflect me in a way; the bottle mustn't be a plain looking glass unlike others; the smell must have that citrusy scent that is so Scorpio; and of course, it has to have that je ne sais quoi which concludes everything.

And alas... I found it. I dunno why it took me so long after its debut that I finally brave enough to try it on. The scent is magical. It's fresh, yet seductive. It's modern, yet with a touch of classic Scorpio signature. And the bottle is a juxtapose of clear (glass) and dark (metallic), that somehow speaks mystery. And the best part, it's from the brand that I'm synonymous with. It's the one...

It's Gucci Guilty.

Boy, do I love the smell. What I love more is what the campaign says about it...

"Young, fearless, with impeccable taste, the wearer of Gucci Guilty for Him is a hero for our age – exuding charisma and more than a little dangerous. His life may be under his control, but he refuses to exert any restraint over his passions. The spirit of hedonism that this unleashes is intoxicating. His power resides in knowing that power is a game, and he is ready to play this game to the full when he meets his female match.

The Gucci Guilty hero takes pleasure in refusing to feel guilty about who he is. His remarkable self-confidence allows him to constantly explore new experiences. His unshakable sense of self-identity wields an irresistible force. He knows what he wants, and he goes after it with single-minded determination and compulsive charm. It is exhilarating to yield to the impulses of a man with such exceptional magnetism. Everyone is in love with the Gucci Guilty man. He is a risk-taker, a thrill-seeker, yet he always remains sensitive to a woman’s desires. He embodies these desires. Men yearn to be him, women to be his.

What a perfect perfume for the rebranding.

A Welcomed Addition to the Bathroom Cabinet!

One Thursday back in May 2008, I was on my way to the Uni when I picked up a copy of Shortlist mag that was handed to me at Seven Sisters station in London by my fav newspaper guy. Or perhaps, I am his fav instead coz no matter how late I am, comes ran or shine he always rushed towards me to give me that free weekly magazine. He knows I'm a regular, and would I never missed it every Thursday morning before 8 am.

Anyway, that's not the story. The story is, that morning I noticed something on the cover that featured Lawrence Dallaglio on the front and Mark Foster on the back cover. Down on the page is what made my eyes go big. 'Vaseline Men'. Vaseline Men? Since when Vaseline started to do some special range for men? This has to be good, I said to myself...

I flipped the page inside and saw a couple of products such as body & face wash, body lotion and the hand cream. I know it's not new that men has those range of stuff, but for Vaseline to be offering that - to me that's kinda huge since they're known for best skincare for less money. Economy, if you can say to that; and being part of recessionisto myself, anything got to do with my opex (operating expenditure, that is) - I think it's better to buy low cost items that really works rather than higher priced skincare since they're not gonna last for a long time. Cost effective, but proven voila!

The one thing that made me bought the stuff is the fact stated on the ad : it can take up to 8 hours to hydrate, which to me is important. And to perform ablution five times a day prior to prayer, which prone to cause the skin to be very dry in the dry London weather, I do need to hydrate my skin coz flaky is not pretty...

[the Vaseline Men ad in Shortlist issue 32; May 2008]

Anyway. Coming back home I was quite disappointed that Malaysia didn't stock any Vaseline Men products. The one that I still got are almost-finishing which include the body lotion and the body wash. I swear they're the best product for men so far when it comes to those two since it keep the skin supple and hydrated for a long period. I kept wishing if one day - once in blue moon, perhaps - somewhat, somewhere, somehow, somebody could bring those stuff to this country coz I never wanna let my skin be worse.

And voila! My wish comes true. Last weekend when I went to Tesco, I saw the products on the shelf. Holla! Not just that, there's a new range too - the whitening body wash and lotion - special for the Asian market, since anything got to do with whitening, it's a huge business here. (Just ask Dior, Shiseido and Estee Lauder for that!). I couldn't be happier. Another holla!

Vaseline Men has arrived in Malaysia, folks! And that's a great addition to my bathroom cabinet. After this, kalau kulit tak putih jugak tak tau la....ahaks!

Another product that really made me ecstatic is the L'oreal MenExpert Anti-perspirant roll-on. The last time I used it is when I bought the stuff at Boots in UK, which is proven works no matter what. You can read my previous post here [click]. Again, I was reeling not to be seeing that product in this country, and almost wanna ask my mate, Rizal, who's now in London to buy me that thing when he return here soon. (But he cancel his return, dang!)

But I don't have to anymore since I found it  at Tesco as well. Not just one, but many types... though the 'Invisible Protect' is nowhere to be seen on the shelf. Probably not yet. Anyhow, there's also a special one for the Asian market i.e. the White Activ for that skin-brightening effect. Isn't that a good reason to be excited?

There you go, a double happiness on my weekend. (Eventhough I'm still reeling on my locked up nightmare!).

Oh, mentioning 'whitening' - please, you should know that it won't made you a Micheal Jackson okay: black to white, no way! (may God bless MJ's soul, btw!)

Etc... Etc...A Little Bit French : Part 1

Recently I'm a little bit worried that my Jean Paul Gaultier lip balm has reached its lowest point. Erm, by that I mean it's almost finishing. My lips tend to be so chappy when it's dry, so the only way to save it looking supple is to use a lip balm instead. And JPG lip balm from his Monsieur range is the best I could ever find out there since it's tailormade for the guys. The truth is, it's not only the texture of it that I love - but the whole design thing in its black rectangular boxy body which looks so masculine chic.

It's almost a year I bought it at Debenhams Oxford Street, now that it's almost gone I'm quite freaking out. (click here to read previous post). I dunno where to find it in this country coz lots of departmental stores don't stock JPG Monsieur. So, what did I do? easy, buy online instead.

I searched high and low, and came across 3 'beauty' websites that do international shipping. Escentual.com, Feelunique.com and Garden.co.uk. The first two doesn't offer the 'clear' lip balm that I wanted, though Feelunique really provide free shipping throughout the world (that's a huge deal, people!). So, I went for Garden.co.uk instead since I know the pharmacy quite well which is located at Covent Garden in London, my usual playground in yesteryears. So, I click it to buy... and the best part, they accept PayPal which makes any transaction so much easier. The delivery time? They said between 5-14 days... which I can wait anyway.

And voila! The stuff arrived in about 5 days... proving it really ships very fast. In fact, just after I click "buy", a message came a couple of minutes later saying "your item has been shipped". Owh, already? And they really mean it! When the parcel arrives in the mailbox, I was quite surprise to see why the 'box' is quite big since the lip balms are actually tiny. The truth is, they threw in some freebies inside. The Mosturizing Face Balm and the Energizing Face Care. It smells divine, and the texture is awesome to the face. So, the shipping cozt of £13 is really worth it, huh? (yeah, quite expensive but they're the only one who offers the 'clear' lip balm).

Satisfied? Absolutely. At least I can go French for another two years... :)

p/s: JPG is French, you know that right?

Grooming is All About Perfect Timing

Grooming is an essential part of life if you wanna look good. Thank God for this new millenium, grooming products for men has contributed to a major increase in the economy itself since all blokes wanna looks equally amazing  as the fairer sex. Nowadays finding a guy who's visiting the beauty counter or men's section in a pharmacy is not a weird thing anymore since keeping up your appearances is one of the effort to climb up the career ladder too.

Though most people tend to have this and that products in their bathroom cabinet, still most of us are quite puzzled on when or how to use it effectively. Me, myself also find it quite a daunting experience to make use of all those grooming things since time is not always on my side. I have to admit that sometimes I just don't care how I use certain grooming products, as long as I smack it on my face and it does it work magically.

But the thing is, it's not. Some product works its charm at certain period of the day. Some even need prior 'prep' before it can really work effectively. And thank goodnes, an article that I found from Men's Health magazine give some tips on the perfect timing of the grooming 'methodology'. I think it does make sense, coz when I think back the products are eventually chemical-based. And having a background in Chemistry, I think the 'timing' is necessary coz from a micromolecular point of view - you do need certain reaction between the products and the cells in/on your body so that what comes out of it is what you read on the tin. A symbiosis between the two, if you may.

Anyway... when is the right time to groom?

1. SCRUB YOUR FACE . . . THE NIGHT BEFORE SHAVING
“Many men make the mistake of using scrubs just before shaving,” says Sally Penford, of the International Dermal Institute. “But shaving itself exfoliates the skin, so a better idea is to scrub the night before – that way you’ll reap all the benefits but won’t further aggravate your skin in the process.”

My word: don't scrub your face too often. You are actually recommended to scrub only once or maximum of twice a week. That's it. Not everyday. Your skin need to 'grow' and if you always take off the upper dermis quite often, it is afraid that your skin will even prone to having more breakouts.

2. SHAVE . . . AT LEAST 10 MINUTES AFTER WAKING.
“Skin is puffy first thing,” says male-grooming expert Jason Shankey. “Give it 10 minutes to settle and for any creasing to subside and you’ll have a smoother surface for shaving. Having woken up properly, you’ll also be more accurate with the blade.”

My word: I don't shave my 'tache coz I tend to trim it using a pair of mini scissors instead. But for beard, I like using the Azor blade by King of Shave. It looks kinda sportscar design!

3. APPLY FRAGRANCE . . . BEFORE MOISTURISING
“Fragrance tends to last longer on well-hydrated and moisturised skin,” says fragrance expert Roja Dove. He suggests applying the scent first, then the moisturiser later.

My word: choose fragrance that suits the occasion. Different scents are meant to be worn on different 'scenes'. I'll be posting a new blogpost soon on how to choose fragrance for work.

4. STYLE YOUR HAIR . . . BEFORE IT’S DRY.
“Apply a product when your hair is damp, not when it’s still wet or bone dry,” says celebrity hairstylist Kevin Murphy. “If you style on wet hair, you’ll dilute the product so it’ll have less hold.” He suggests towel-drying and waiting 10 minutes before going to work with the wax.

My word: the trend nowadays is to go with a matte look. Out-of-bed is always a great get-up style, though for work it's not always recommended, especially if you're a professional. On the other hand, the wet, oil-slick look is too tacky coz you might come across as a cheap pimp! However, that doesn't mean you can't experiment. =)

5. BRUSH YOUR TEETH . . . BEFORE BREAKFAST.
Tooth enamel begins to dissolve when the pH in your mouth reaches an acidic 5.5. Since fruit juices can have an even more acidic pH of three, it’s worth brushing before downing them. “If you forget, wait for an hour, by which time the enamel will be tougher,” advises dentist David Cocket.

My word: electric toothbrush is always the best coz the rotation will clean up the dirt much effectively. But if you're using a normal toothbrush, consider brusing your teeth in a rotating mode instead of 'lateral' and do it for at least 2 mins in total of your brushing time. Some recommended to use mouthwash before brushing, and flossing after.

Another fact: always brush your teeth before going to bed, coz study shows that it can prevent heart disease too.

6. MOISTURISE . . . LAST THING.
“Studies have shown that water loss through the skin is greatest at night, so apply moisturiser before bed,” says dermatologist Nick Lowe. “Moisturising is more beneficial then because the cream will be better absorbed in a warm bed.”

My word: I always bring extra moisturizer in my bag coz having to perform ablution before prayer tend to promote dehydration of the skin. Both, facial and body cream. Since for men, it'll take at least another 8 hours for the skin to rehydrate, it's better to smack on the moisturizer before the skin become too dry.

Mentioning moisturizing, if you're living in a sunny climate never leave home without putting on the sunscreen. Yeah, I know everyone wanna look tan but not an orange tan. The best time to apply the SPF cream is at least half an hour before you go out (or I think 15 min before is also acceptable). I tend to choose one that is non-visible, waterbased to avoid the white marks.

7. TREAT A SPOT . . . BEFORE BED.
“Applying a spot cream or treatment at this time means that it can go to work without the skin having to deal with all the other daytime assaults – such as pollution and UV exposure – at the same time,” says Penford.

8. USE ANTI-AGEING CREAM . . . AT NIGHT.
The skin switches to repair mode at night, says Paolo Giacomoni, Clinique’s executive director of research and development, making this the best time to reverse skin damage. “Oxygen consumption and blood flow increase, which shows that the skin is preparing for the next day,” he says.

My word: Before going to bed is also the best time to smack on that eyecream, so that when you woke up there'll be no panda-eyes moment. If you do get undereye bags, then de-puff it using an eye roll-on. (It works for me!)

Also, if you wanna avoid your face looking pudgy the next morning, avoid eating carbs the night before. Consume protein-based food instead like the protein shake or two slices of high-protein bread to let the collagen keep in check. And who knows, your face might look even chiselled! :)
