Samsung N310 Review: The Object Of Affection!

If not because my Fujitsu P7120 went bust during the previous Easter break, there is a slim chance for me to look for any new laptop. Yet alone a netbook. Why? Because my Fujitsu is by far the best ultraportable laptop I had. With 3 USB ports, a CDRW/DVD drive, wifi/bluetooth, magnesium alloy body and the most important 1.3 kg weight and 10" screen, nothing can match it. But, hell no... there's finally a blessing in disguise. It went off for no reason, get heated up too badly (even can fry some eggs on it) and Windows got frozen. So, I have no choice other than get a new ultraportable.

Introducing my new N310 - the new netbook by Samsung. Netbook? Yeah, right. Alas I bow to the fact that I've owned one. When I get this tiny little machine from Micro Anvika a month ago, they said I'm the first person to buy it. Probably the first person to ever own it in England coz then they've just released it about 2 days before my purchase.

So, what's hot? What's getting to me to own N310? Well, it's all about the design. A brainchild of great designer, Naoto Fukasawa. A cross between Motorola Pebble phone and Apple Macbook. Very stylish, solid and great looking. And thankfully the spec is not too bad either.

Let's see what makes it cool...

  • The design is like a small bento box with rounded edges. Dimension: 26 x 18.3 x 3 cm.
  • The embossed 'SAMSUNG' logo on the top.
  • Rubbery finish, so less smudges will appear.

  • A very solid look. No protruding edges (except teeny weeny VGA port on the right)
  • It opens up without latches.
  • The screen and chiclet keyboard design reminisce Macbook.
  • There's also a SD/MMC slot on the front, bottom left (not seen). In this black version Sony memory stick can't be used (damn!)

  • The 1.3 MP webcam. Located slightly off centre on top part of the screen. Resolution? Quite good, and helpful if you wanna check yourself out (ala Devil Wears Prada!)

  • And oh, the keyboard is also anti-bacterial too. Yet, please make sure you wash your hand after going to the toilet and prior of using this machine okay!

  • On the left part: one USB port (powered one), the Kensington lock, ethernet port (with cover), the vent as well as mic and earphone jack.
  • The speaker is located near the screen. Sound wise? Well, quite Ok eventhough not that powerful.

  • On the right: 2 USB ports, 1 VGA port (with silicone cover) and power port.

  • Spec: Intel Atom N270 1.6 GHz, 1 GB RAM (DDR2, expandable up to 2 GB), 160 GB memory.
  • Preinstalled: Windows XP Home SP3

  • The trackpad or touchpad (whatever you wanna call it), reminisce Macbook. You can pinch to zoom in/out or maximize/minimize, make circle motion or touch up/down on the right side to scroll up/down. Very cool huh!
  • The bar below it is the left/right click. Sleek..
  • Indicator light on the bottom left. Gives blue light for power/wifi/busy; green/red for AC/DC power.
  • Compared with my prev Fujitsu with manual on/off wifi/bluetooth button, this N310 on/off wifi is controlled via 'Func+F9' on the keyboard.

And comparing with my previous Fujitsu P710... it appears smaller!

  • The bottom part of the netbook. It comes in 4-cell battery, lasting approx 5 hours (so far I've experinced only 3 hours before it goes off. What??)

  • Design so small and light. Not taking much space in the man bag! The envy of anyone who's looking.
  • The screen bezel is about 7 mm thick. Pretty and cool...

So, my final verdict after a month use? Just great. Simple as that. It's really a head-turner coz of it's small, sleek look. Price? £400... but now even cheaper. They come in other colors too like Orange and Blue with additional memory stick support.

The downside?

  • Sometimes it makes some little buzzing noise due to the cooling fan inside. Hence, I do experienced some lag in the performance.
  • The screen resolution is 1024 x 600. It's a tad smaller compared to my prev Fujitsu P7120. But you can go more than that via Samsung Easy Display Manager, which will cause some more 'scrolling' of the desktop coz the taskbar can't not seen!
  • The battery is said to last about 5 hours. So far it doesn't happen to me. Only about 3.5 hours. I dunno how can this be?
  • The brightness of the screen supposed can be controlled via Func+ Up/Down button. Yes, it does when I first use it. Then, when I did Samsung Easy Display Manager software update, this function seems not working. Wha..??

Apart than that, do I like it? I love it! They say with Samsung it's never hard to imagine. LOL!
