Highstreet Shopping: My Verdict

I can again reminisce that the year 2008 is the year where my highstreet shopping activity did evolved. Not just evolution, but revolution and renaissance too, if u may. Evolution, because I never saw that the taste of highstreet fashion in the same way like years back. Revolution, because I can finally get creative yet still look like a million dollar by not spending a fortune on a piece of clothing item (still I spend quite a fortune too with too many clothes!).

After months wandering in and out of the stores, I finaly can have my own take on the great bargain, great design and great look from the highstreet shopping.

  • BEST DENIM - UNIQLO tops my list with their great selections of denim jeans and jacket. The fabric is amazing esp when it is sourced and designed by the Japanese. No hidden perks here, just great cut and great texture. From Selvedge denim, to one-wash; skinny tapered to slim fit. Just amazing. And cheap too!

  • BEST KNITWEAR - It's a tie between UNIQLO and H&M. Uniqlo due to the price (of course) and selections of cut (V-ncek or crew) and colors. They have best selections of either extra fine merino to pure lambwool to cashmere. On the other hand, H&M's merino wool jumper and cardi has an amazing fit. The fabric doesn't worn out yet maintain its sturdiness.

  • BEST SUIT - RIVER ISLAND. The cut, the fabric, the texture and the color are all great. Very mod and urban. I like the one with one-button suit from their White Label range. Slim cut and very modern chic. Zara also did good range of suits too, so as Topman especially with their slim fit cut.

  • BEST SHIRT: ZARA and COS. Zara has a great selections of slim fit shirts either plain or stripes, sheen or matt and come in cotton and cotton-mix. COS' shirts have great cut and texture, resembles a great Japanese design. Plain and simple. Unpretentious. H&M also offers quite good selection esp from their 'officewear' range.

  • BEST T-SHIRT: TOPMAN, ZARA and GAP. My choice for T-shirt is simple. As long as the arm fit well and doesn't make me look like a 'rocketman', then I'll consider it as a good tee. If it make me like I'm 'flying to the moon'..it's a big NO, NO! Topman did a good cuff-end tee with organic material like cotton and bamboo fibres, while Zara has a great selections of slim and super slim-fit T-shirts. The 'Stretch' range from GAP is also good coz the arm doesn't flip out and about (otherwise I'll look like a silly seal).

  • BEST FOOTWEAR - ZARA. From boots, to lace-up to loafers and sandals, Zara has great selections of footwear. Their leather shoes come in various leather treatment - patent, hi-shine, matt, grained etc. They are known for the in-trend and catwalk copy. Price is affordable given the types of material used. And the good thing - most of the inner linings are either from calf or sheepskin. When they did SALE, their footwear is what people are looking for.

  • BEST ACCESSORIES: Shades - RIVER ISLAND and H&M. From the aviator to the cool geek-look shades, River Island and H&M offers a good variety with extremely low prices.

  • BEST ACCESSORIES: Bag - ZARA. They have a good selection of bags especially from the leather one. Some designs are amazing (depends on season), while some is just acceptable. They also offer different range, from holdalls to tote and messanger. Compared to other highstreet stores, Zara bag is better.

  • BEST ACCESSORIES: Scarves - UNIQLO and GAP. From cable knit, heavy lambswool, to light summer scarves, there's a tie between these two. I like the summer scarves from Uniqlo due to it's color and material used, and the winter scarves from GAP because of the lambwool and funky yet cool designs.
  • BEST ACCESSORIES: Belts - UNIQLO and ZARA. Uniqlo gives a wide variety of designs be it weaved leather or plain, while Zara is well-known for mock exotic leather belt like the croc and snake leather prints. Both offers amazing prices given the material and design.

  • BEST DESIGNER COLLABORATION: H&M. Without a doubt, having experience collaborating with Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel's Creative Director), Stella McCartney, Victor & Rolf, Roberto Cavalli and Commes des Garcons, H&M knows how to do it better. The range brought down the price of the infamous designers' tag to the street level, where people like moi can buy. Next, they announce to work with Matther Williamson for the SS09 collection.

There you go. My own best selection from the highstreet stores. Next time I went shopping to look for great design at bargain prices, those stores are where I'm heading to. Happy shopping!
